International Business Etiquette

Went to a lecture given by Iain Young, CEO of Metro Education, basic etiquettes of business professionalism.Learned some funny knowledge: Chinese drink warm water, foreigners don't,either hot water or cold water. When foreign clients come to China the first time, take them to Cantonese restaurants to have dinner, remember to be the first person to use a spoon instead of chop sticks, don't be stupid to ask the waitor to bring folks and knives, because that makes foreigners feel they are not that clever. Man should use chewing gum and aftershave(not "perfume",perfume is for woman) before working. Email is a very formal communication tool, so, never use icons like smile face":)", sad face":(",etc. Always rememeber to check your spelling, grammmar mistakes are acceptable because we are not native speakers, even natives make grammar mistakes, but spelling mistakes make really bad impression.
During the presentation, Mr.Young asked "How many of you speak English fluently? Please raise your hand" After a long while, only one person raised his hand. But nine in ten would write "fluent English" in their resume in China, said Mr.Young, a British funny man with heavy accent. In many cases, English is not the most important thing, for example, maybe accounting experiece is more important when accountant is applied. Most of Chinese students are just at "good at "level, to be honest, they just have to write "good at" instead of "fluent".Iain said he cares nothing about CET-4 and CET-6, he knows that Chinese students are good at exams.
Iain told us a way to get a intern: Go to the British Consolate in Shanghai, they have all the British company contact information, send each company a email telling that you are interested and want to get a intern in their company. You send 400 emails, you may only get 4 or 5 responses, but that's enough, you only need one! I was so happy when I heard such a special and interesting way of getting intership, but soon depressed by the price of that company list, 400 RMB, that's enough to buy a very good suit!
