Summary of This Week

It’s very tense time the other days in VPO, though I didn’t show anything to my boss until the last day of the week, there were many things I had to learn, but all the other staff are always very busy, so I had to get my questions prepared, once any of them got a minute’s idle time, I seized it and popped up my question. On the first day in the office, Didier gave me some documents to read, it’s part of the department’s business, but not complete. I finished reading them very quickly, of course I didn’t read them precisely, just a general scan, then Didier asked me to have a meeting with him, he started to give me assignments, he talked for about two hours, there were many terms and expressions I didn’t understand, because I was not used to his accent and those business relative terms didn’t appear the materials I read, so there were many unclear points, but I always nodded my head and said “yeah”, I don’t know why I said yes when I actually didn’t understand him very much, the reason may be that I used to say yes most of time, so the answer to no matter what question is always yeah. A series of “yeah” caused a lot of problems latter, the director thought I understood what he said cause my answer was “yeah”, but actually I didn’t, after our meeting, he left me alone and gave no instructions any more. I stared at my key points paper he wrote to me (he kept all the key points of our meeting on a paper) but got no idea how to start mywork, his handwriting was totally different from the way Chinese write English, I don’t know if it’s also very bad when compares with other French handwritings, anyhow, I can’t understand those words on that piece of paper. I didn’t want to ask him again about my task, that may disappoint him seriously and make me stupid, I tried to ask Bing about my work, he is a Chinese, I though he may knew what I should do and where to start, unfortunately, he didn’t know it, and neither did other colleagues, then I started to think that I have to understand the system before I can classify those files and build a perfect folding system, in the following three days, I did nothing but reading those files and documents, and tried to figure out how the system works, the procedure of the whole department business, the role of the department in the whole group, the relation between our department and it’s divisions and suppliers, etc. After I finally got a little clearer about my work, some unexpected thing happened, I asked for leave when the end of August, Didier got quite angry like I said in my former blogs, the most impressive thing he said was that I had been in the office for four days and showed him nothing but was already asking for leave. I was a little surprised at that, I thought I was working so hard, I asked so many questions, read so many files, if I score my performance of those four days, I would gave 8 in 10, but he said I showed him nothing, which means my performance was very poor, the reason maybe that I gave him no results about my work, and that’s true. He told me not to think about doing big things all day, just do little things, and improve it day by day, then that would be a big thing. He was right, I was thinking about creating a perfect folding system by first understanding the system expressly, but no results came out. Learn while doing is always the best way.
OK, for summary, there are two things I think I learned this week:
1. Never say yes when you don’t get it, there is a Confucius saying in China: “知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也” which means say yes when you know it, say no when you don’t know it, that’s real know.
2. Never dream doing great thing or do perfect thing without start to try it. Never mind making mistakes, try it, and then improve it, that’s the way how big thing is accomplished.

Agreement with Valeo APO

Today, pang. Song and Jenny told HR Na. their plan, they want to work until the end of August and told Na. they will give answers about part time schedule after next semester begins. Right after their discussion with Na. I went to Na. and told her that I want to have the same schedule as Pang. Song, She asked me to discuss it with Didider, so I told Didier that I want to leave for home for about two weeks after the end of August, and then he asked me how many days I can work after next semester begins, I said maybe two or three days, but I can’t promise, he got angry, at least not happy at all, then he, David, and Na. had a discussion, the result is that we three interns have to give Na. the answer of our schedule.
Later ,I had a brief discussion, but mainly about my tasks, I didn’t understand him clearly the first day tasks assigned, today we talked about it again, but I’m still not very clear about my task, there are still many terms and abr.s I don’t understand. Didier : you have been here for four days, but .you showed me nothing, that means I don’t need you, that’s what my boss always tells me. The way we Chinese people doing things may be different from French, they need you to show progress each stage, we just check the results. Today is the longest day I spent in Valeo APO>Left the office at about seven thirty.
Any way, I will stay in Valeo to the end of next semester, learn as much as I can.
Ok, that all for today, tired now, time to shower.

Bless our senior

I heard from Chen Zhou yesterday that one of a senior student in our school, and probably from our department, committed suicide diving from floor nine of Mechanical Building. The reason is still not clear; some people said it’s because of the graduate essay, he didn’t pass, so finished his life under pressure. Today, the suicide in on the newspaper and news net media like Sina, Sohu, there is also many comments in bbs.

My work: this morning I told Didier that I need to understand the system before I can setup the rules for filing and folding, I read some of those old files and asked Chen Zhou about the process of the business and the main function of MES department, simply speaking, MES is a service department help it’s eight divisions to find lower cost suppliers and conduct auditing to guarantee the quality of those products produced by valeo’s productions sites. Now I know my tasks better than yesterday, but there is still much to know to get to the insight of the business. Tomorrow I will have my email address at Valeo, and then I can ask my colleagues to send those missing docs to me to classify them, there is still much to learn. My director will leave China to India for business this Friday, after that I will use email to report to him and ask his advice and suggestions. Bing is very nice, maybe tomorrow I can ask him to give me a brief lesson about the business process of our department and the whole office.

ARE INTERN CHEAP LABOR?

Today I introduced myself to several colleagues, I’m very happy that almost half of them are graduated from SJTU, Bing, a very nice guy, Zhou Chen, she also majored in IE, graduated in 2001, Li Yu, sits next to me, now we know each other, then I can ask them any questions freely. Didier seemed not very happy today, I saw his neck very red when talking with YongHong, YongHong didn’t look at him, he was angry:Yonghong, I tell you this is not the way of communication, he didn’t shout, I think it’s very nice not to shout to staff. Before I left the office, I asked Didier for advice for the filing and folding system. He told me to make a draft first, then we can have a meeting with all the staff to discuss about it, if it works, we will implement it. I though I just have to sort those paper docs and IT docs. Now I know I was wrong, I don’t think I can achieve the tasks without understanding the system clearly like the business process.

I was so surprised when Na.song told me that we have only 1500 RMB per month, we all expected that there will be at least 100 per day. A couple of days later we will sign an agreement, I have to reconsider about it. Maybe I should quite after a month.
Ok, it’s time to shower. That’s all for today.

First Day at Work

Get up at 7:20, arrived at xingzhuang station at 8, there were so many people, all office workers, carrying breakfast and newspaper, I couldn’t get in the train when I got to the waiting line, so I wait about 5 minutes and took the next one. It was about 9 when I got out of the station of people square, Song and Jenny were waiting for me at the end of Nanjing Road, we arrived in the office at 9:30 as planned. Song had worked there two days last week; she started her work right after in the office. Didier is my director and I was given some materials about the company like quality assurance documents and logistics protocols, I read those documents quite fast, almost no questions, then at about 12, My director invited me to have lunch in a restaurant underground, ordered Chinese food, not very good, just so so.
In the first two hours of the afternoon, I really got nothing to do, so I reviewed those document materials, after that, I asked my director if there is any other materials I can read. He asked me to a meeting room, and then started to assign tasks to me. He has an accent, so I didn’t understand all what he said. Just caught that he wants me to integrate the information of all the suppliers and make a database using excel, he also introduced to me the product board again, asked me to make some improvements, replace the paper labels with magnetic labels, tomorrow there will be a supplier coming to the office to amend the board.
After the assignment, I got my laptop from the IT guy, and then started to wonder how I can start my tasks tomorrow, he said so much but I caught just some…at about 6:30, the off work time we were told, Song was still sticking on her work, I was actually very hungry at that time, but I thought it may be not appropriate to leave the office without the permission of my director, so I waited for it. when it came to 7, most staff had already gone, my boss still mentioned nothing about my leaving, but another employee said we could go home earlier because we got less paid than our boss, so we don’t have to stay so later in the office. I couldn’t stick anymore, so I cleaned my desk, put off my laptop, said goodbye to everyone, then asked Song and Jenny leaving together.
Arrived at home at about 8:30, really so tired now. Ok, that’s all for today.
